Ayurveda is India’s highly respected traditional natural healing system, and Triphala is one of the most popular Ayurvedic remedies in India. It is made from the fruits of three trees that grow in India and the Middle East. The Sanskrit term triphala means “three fruits.” It is a stool normalizer: a mild laxative that does not irritate the colon. According to the Chopra Center, “unlike other laxatives that deplete the body, triphala actually strengthens and nourishes the bones, nervous system, and reproductive organs.”
The three components of triphala are amalaki, haritaki, and bibhitaki. Haritaki is the main laxative component. Bibhitaki is said to help eliminate excess mucous in the body. Amalaki, also known as Indian gooseberry or amla, is a strong natural antioxidant rich in vitamin C.
Due to its mild nature, it is safe to take daily, although not in pregnancy. Please check with your doctor on what is an appropriate amount for you. We have also found it be helpful in gastroparesis, when the digestive track is moving too slowly. It can also be helpful to take while on trips to help your digestive system adjust to new food, water, environment, and stay regular!
