Family Practice
Family Practice is the medical
specialty that provides continuing and comprehensive health care for
each family member. The family practice physician must complete a
three year residency program and pass a certification exam. Family

Medical Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a method of encouraging
the body to promote natural healing and to improve functioning. This
is done by inserting needles and applying heat or electrical
stimulation at very precise acupuncture points. Acupuncture is a very
old medical art and there are many approaches to learning and
practicing it. Medical Acupuncture is the term used to describe
acupuncture performed by a doctor trained and licensed in Western
Medicine who has also had thorough training in acupuncture as a
specialty practice.

Supplements and Herbs
Supplements (vitamins, minerals, amino
acids, etc.) and herbs are recognized as part of a comprehensive
treatment plan for many diseases. At Steinmetz Medical, we integrate
these treatments into your individual care. We base our
recommendations on scientific evidence as well as extensive experience
from other countries in the use of supplements and herbs for
supporting the body in many disease conditions. In addition, we advise
on types of preparations that are most effective and try to guide you
to quality manufacturers of these products. Your chart is reviewed for
any drug/herbal interactions. Herbs and supplements are generally
safe. However, unsupervised use of these products often wastes
patients' time and money and could result in serious injury or even
death. Our primary goal is maintain good health with a healthy life
style and the least amount of additional supplements either
prescription drugs, over the counter medications, nutritional
supplements or herbs.
Integrative Medicine
Unfortunately, modern medical sciences
greatest weakness is in the area of chronic illness. Many treatments
are only moderately effective and often with serious side effects.
This leads many patients to seek alternative treatments many of which
are unproven and may have little or no value. As a family physicians,
trained to think in multisystems, our doctors offer expertise in both
modern medicine and alternative treatment options. Our doctors review
all your laboratory studies, radiological reports and consultations to
be sure that a complete medical work-up has been done. In addition,
our doctors review what areas of alternative medicine may be effective
for you and advises you on the most cost effective plan to follow.
They may suggest acupuncture, herbs or supplements, manipulation, food
allergy testing, or homeopathy. If you need referral to a medical
specialist or a person in a particular alternative medicine field, our
doctors will refer you to quality practioners in the Washington area
while continuing to coordinate your care. They are happy to review
with you treatment options you have found from other sources including
the Internet, friends and written materials (i.e. books, magazines).
